Kibbutz Sde Boker is home not only to the Negev University, but to the Institute for Desert Research as well, and it has yielded exciting results. At this ground breaking institute pioneering research has been done with crops and solar energy, and with solar powered electricity.
Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, built his home in this Kibbutz. We will visit his home and the displays within and discuss Ben Gurion's intriguing personality and as well as his vision of a blooming Negev.
The Ramon Crater was formed as the crater's contents were swept away by erosion via the Ramon River and deposited in the Arava region. This crater presents us with several unique phenomena: exposed Jurassic rock, the 'Carpentry Shop', the dams at Ardon Stream, Cone Hill, Horseshoe Crevice and more.
We can choose to travel on foot or ride in Off-road Vehicles. The range of tours is extensive and caters to all type of visitor.
You will be introduced to the nomadic shepherds of the Negev desert area, to their official and unofficial settlements, their recent feminist ventures in female Bedouin society, romance, beliefs and myths.

The Nabateans lived in our region for a millennium until the 7th Century. They were a mysterious and resourceful people who managed to prosper in the desert and transport perfumes across great distances to Europe.
In the Negev we will find the remains of their Spice Road (Myrrh and Frankincense), which are part of the larger ancient Perfume Road. We will also see secret water holes and Nabataean cities that later became Byzantine.
It will take us most of the day to travel along the riverbed from Ma'ale Akravim to the Arava Road.
While going down this very serpentine Akravim Road, we will hear the disturbing account of the bus that was attacked by infiltrators from across the border. We will then travel through the wilderness.
This course is not available during the summer.
This is a full day trip from the Ramon Crater, through the Nekarot Riverbed and to the Arava Road.
We will hear of the mythological Nabataeans and their trade in perfumes and spices along the Spice Road (a.k.a Incense Road) more than 2,000 years ago. We will visit Nabatean mini-fortresses; Chan Muah, Bor Nekarot and, time permitting, Ovdat.
This course is not available during the summer.
